Mom Update

The doctor had bad news for us this morning...Mom has developed another fistula or hole. She just had surgery to repair a fistula that persistently drained for almost five straight months. The first fistula developed after an operation to remove and repair diseased tissue in her stomach and intestine. The fistula occurred when the internal stitches ripped open from the tissue they were to hold together. Years of Crohn's Disease and steroid and immunosuppressant therapy caused the surrounding tissue to weaken.

Mom had to wait for her body to heal and become healthy enough to endure another operation. Even though she couldn't eat she gained a few pounds from IV feedings every day. The doctor stapled, sutured and glued the old fistula closed and surrounded it with healthy and scar tissue to sort of cushion the area and aid in healing...and PREVENT further opening.

The doctor doubts the new opening is the old fistula that has opened (and if it is...what a persistent little booger!!!!!), but maybe a new one close by. The differences in this fistula and the "old" fistula:
*not as much drainage (even though it's a lot and requires a drainage bag)
*different color of drainage
*her body is healthier
*she's been off her steroids and immunosuppressants for months (compared with just days before)
*My daddy's been a superb nurse and, unfortunately, has had a lot of practice with the IV feedings and wound care over the past several months.
*GOD WON'T ALLOW HER TO BEAR A BURDEN THAT IS TOO LARGE FOR HER TO CARRY!!!!!!!

Thank you for your prayers and well wishes and encouragement. Your support is getting me through this! I'll try to update as often as I can. (The computer in the hospital/hotel is nice and handy, but it's getting on my nerves a little bit)

Thursday 13 (#4)

Thirteen Things that make me wonder...is this a hospital or a five star hotel?
(I won't be able to get around to a lot of 13's, but will try)

1. A personal escort from surgery waiting to the hospital room...she was like an elevator operator and bellboy all in one. (How do you get that job?)

2. All rooms are private rooms (the way all hospital rooms should be!) Walls are painted a grey-blue color with very expensive artwork (that is found throughout the hospital-hotel...I could happily live the rest of my life on the artwork alone!)

3. Flat screen plasma televisions in every room.

4. DVD/VCR combo

5. Computer with high speed internet access. (The computer is attached to a swing arm hanging from the ceiling and can move all across the room in different positions. Very handy.)

6. A mini fridge stocked with drinks.

7. Two big and comfy chairs that recline, plus ottoman.

8. Real toiletpaper...not the cheap one-ply sandpaper kind.

9. A day spa downstairs for patients and family.

10. Gourmet cafeteria food (I believe that's called an oxymoron!)

11. Room service: able to order anything from menu and it is made to order and served within the hour with a smile :p

12. Free snacks and drinks available for family members.

13. Starbucks in the lobby...not a knock-off coffee shop. (I prefer mom and pop coffee shops to Starbucks and Starbucks wannabes.)

13+1. 4 or 5 patients per nurse and nurse assistant compared with 8-16 at other facilities. Nice! (Again...the way all hospitals should be!)

13+2. I don't even have time to describe the bathroom. I'll just say it's the best one I've seen...with real washcloths and towels (butter yellow)...not thin hospital white.

My Mom

Today my mom is having surgery. Surgery to repair a hole in her stomach/intestine that occurred when the internal sutures ripped apart after a surgery in September (due to steroids and immunosuppressant therapy). Since that time she's not had anything to eat...only IV nutrition. And she's been dealing with a draining abdominal wound (which is remarkably smaller than it was in September).

She's had to endure obstacle after obstacle until her body was ready and could handle another operation. That time has finally arrived. The doctor anticipates only 2 to 3 days in the hospital (compared with the 30 day hospital stay in September). And he believes she will be able to eat before she leaves the hospital! (Something she hasn't been able to do for five months...actually since last summer when her Crohn's decided to take over her life again.)

Praying, knowing and trusting God will continue to keep her in His loving and healing hands. May she heal completely and be able to eat...and may I not gain weight by celebrating with her! :p (Isn't she beautiful?! I can't wait to look like my mom! I'm already working on the grey hair :D)

Monday Memories (#1)

Monday Memories: Did I ever tell you aboutthe time I needed lunch money?

One Sunday afternoon my best friend Jennifer and I decided to go out to eat after church. Jacob was spending the day with my parents, so we were going to make a day of girl stuff. I told Jennifer I needed to stop by the ATM to get some cash.

I pulled up to an ATM machine, pulled out my card and put it in the slot. Jennifer started laughing hysterically...at what I have no idea, but I giggled at her. I turned back toward the ATM machine and listened to Jennifer as she tried to talk.

I put the card back in the slot and felt Jennifer hitting me. Just as I was ready to let go of my card Jennifer punched me on the arm. I turned back and hit her on her leg and told her to quit hitting me (great parenting skills...). Her face was dark red and tears poured from her eyes. "What in the world is wrong with this crazy girl?," I thought. Finally, Jennifer was able to get out a few words in-between the laughter..."It's...a...mailbox."

Yes! I tried to get money from a blue United States Postal Service mailbox!

May We Always Have Sugar!

This morning Jacob fixed his breakfast like normal. He walked over to the sugar bowl and suddenly stopped. With eyes big and hopeful like a kid in a candy shop...he asked, "Is this full of sugar?"

What was he talking about? Then I remembered my Homer Laughlin soup tureen was sitting out on the counter. The thought of Jacob thinking a soup tureen was our new sugar bowl cracked me up.

I had to snap this photo just the way Jacob saw it. It kinda does look like a candy shop...or a sugar alter. (The sugar was out as a reminder to fill the sugar bowl...just for kicks I might just fill the soup tureen. :p )

(I saw this today on Plum Crazy Millers)

Thursday 13 (#3)

Thirteen Things Kimmy and Jacob love about American Idol:

1. The hundreds of people who believe they can really sing...and are totally shocked to hear someone tell them the truth...YOU CAN'T SING!

2. All the crazy people.

3. The way people dress for attention.

4. The shocking way teens cuss and behave so badly while their parents stand right beside them...not saying a word. (Parents... 1. Discipline your children 2. Don't encourage them and fill them with false hope... singing is one thing you can either do or not do. simple...we can't have or do everything we want in life.

5. The way contestants love up the judges before the audition, but bad mouth and hate them seconds after they're rejected.

6. That a girl from the Ukraine auditioned (singing Bohemian Rhapsody nonetheless) just to receive a Performers Visa. God Bless the U.S.

7. Grown men can proudly dress like Dorothy.

8. A man clearly smokin' crack and can't sing, but can jump around the stage and act a fool can go to Hollywood.

9. Contestants can audition multiple times and continue to make idiots of themselves.

10. Fake tans, anorexia and heavy make-up won't make you a star.

11. The way Simon tells it like it is.

12. Paula's teeth don't seem to be taking up as much of her mouth as they did last season...must be usin' the new Fixodent.

13. We sound so much better when we sing!!!! :p

Jacob Disproves Theory

Most of my life I've believed that if you burp, fart and sneeze at the sametime you will die. I've had no reason not to believe this theory...no evidence to disprove it. My very first crush warned me...so it had to be true.

It was summer. I was with my best-friend, Sara, and her family on their boat. Her older brother, Brian, was my first crush. I loved him. Loved...as much as a third grade girl could love.

Brian, Sara and I just finished "eating" our sandwiches...Brian noticed the disgusted look on my face after I took the first bite. (I can't even remember what it was...but I can remember sheer terror...I have to eat this?!) Brian said, "I don't eat these. I just throw them overboard. It's okay. Mom knows they're nasty." (If she knew why did she fix them? What was wrong with PB and J?)

Anyway...Brian looked over at me and told me that if I would ever burp, fart and sneeze at the sametime I would die. I was terrified! I'd never heard that before. Thank God that 6th grader passed on such valuable information on to a dumb little 3rd grader. Advice that could potentially save her life.

For the past 21 years I believed what Brian told me that summer afternoon on his boat. I lived in constant fear. Until tonight...Jacob not only proved you can burp, fart and sneeze at the sametime, but you won't die if you do. Thank you Jacob for your sacrifice!

I wish I knew where Brian was so I could tell him the good news!

Which religion is the right one for you?

I already know what religion I am...and the relationship I have with Jesus Christ my Lord and Savior. I was interested in this little quiz and kinda surprised by the results. It didn't break down the results, but I would like to know HOW IN THE WORLD do I have any percentage at all in Paganism, Satanism and agnosticism????? That's just crazy! I must have hit the wrong button somewhere along the line. Anywho...I don't need a test to tell me what I already know in my heart.

You scored as Christianity. Your views are most similar to those of Christianity. Do more research on Christianity and possibly consider being baptized and accepting Jesus, if you aren't already Christian.

Christianity is the second of the Abrahamic faiths; it follows Judaism and is followed by Islam. It differs in its belief of Jesus, as not a prophet nor historical figure, but as God in human form. The Holy Trinity is the concept that God takes three forms: the Father, the Son (Jesus), and the Holy Ghost (sometimes called Holy Spirit). Jesus taught the idea of instead of seeking revenge, one should love his or her neighbors and enemies. Christians believe that Jesus died on the cross to save humankind and forgive people's sins.

MyHeritage

So I uploaded a photo on MyHeritage
to find out what celebrity I look like. Penelope Cruz and Katharine Hepburn... Huh? So I uploaded another photo...and again both Penelope and Katharine are my celebrity look-alikes.

I can see why...dark hair, big eyes, a big nose, high cheek bones...B-e-a-utiful! I love Katharine Hepburn...my all-time favorite! This is the second time this week test results compared me with Katharine. And I'm fine with lookin' like Penelope. She's a size ZERO y muy bonita! I did make enchilladas for dinner :p

The results also showed my male counterparts. Huh?

Jacob's results...

Elijah Wood and Leonardo DiCaprio...must be their big eyes and round little faces.

This is his female look-alike. But his "huh" is way more bizarre than mine! (What's with the big noses?)

What could it be?

Taking Snickers out last night to go pot...I see something on the ground reflecting our outside light. I carefully take out my handy-dandy mini Army flashlight (that I keep in my coat pocket so I can find the doggie doo before it finds my shoe). I slowly walk over to see what might be lying next to my driveway.

As I get closer I find there are three metal tubes...of lip gloss. Lip gloss? Where did they come from? Surely they don't belong to Jacob or his football buddies...and if they do I don't wanna think about it.

Could it be I just uncovered a terrorist plot? Perhaps I was Googled...and they found a map of my neighborhood...my street...my house. Or perhaps my lines were tapped and the government overheard my need for glittery lips. Or perhaps the three shiny tubes of lip gloss belong to the little girls who just moved in next door.

Thursday 13 (#2)

Thirteen Things I thank God for this week:(I had several ideas for my second 13, but have too much to be thankful for not to list them. This is more a list for me...)

1. My daddy's biopsy came back NEGATIVE! The antibiotics seem to be fighting the sepsis, and his fever is down from 104.2 to normal!

2. For my mom GAINING weight since she's been able to drink Carnation Instant Breakfast twice a day for almost two weeks now. (After complication, after complication, after complication after surgery for her Crohn's...she hasn't eaten since August 31st, and until recently wasn't able to take anything by mouth except for a few ice chips per hour.)

3. For having the ability to tell Jacob, "I love you", dozens of times a day.

4. For having the ability to hear my Jacob tell me dozens of times a day, "I love you infinity times more than you love me. "

5. For my baby sister who was able to take me to the doctor, sit with me for 4 1/2 hours during exams and tests. And for giving me two fingers to squeeze while the doctor injected a bilateral nerve block in my greater occipital nerves. Ouich!

6. For my parents who live one street over and were able to "babysit" me when my brain wasn't behaving. (Due to my disease I have alternating side effects similar to having a brain tumor.)

7. For allowing me to "sleep" in the same bed with Jacob while we were at my parents. (1. That boy can kick and squirm and take up more bed than any adult! 2. I couldn't put any pressure on the back of my head so I had to roll from side to side...at the same time I was trying to avoid swinging arms. I needed a helmet...or restraints :p)

8. For Jacob not having one headache this week!

9. For Snickers not having a seizure!

10. For having heat...even if the gas bill did just double in one month! ( I can't imagine how much it would cost if I actually kept the thermostat at 70 or above)

11. That I finally figured out which new Medicare Prescription Drug Plan to choose out of 46 possible plans "designed to meet my needs.

12. For all the nice people I've "met" during Thursday 13.

13. For finding the dishes I wanted on Target.com for 75% off!

Favorite Movie Quotes (and your favorite movies of 2005))

The Movie Monkey visited my Thursday 13 and commented on the movie "elf". Well, that opened a flood of quotes from that movie. (If you haven't seen it, you must. If you won't see it because...God forbid you don't like *whisper* Will Ferrill (that hurts me just to think of it)...again, you must! It is so funny. Of course, my mom says she doesn't have to watch it since Jacob, my brother and I quote it every time we're together. Anywho...don't let that stop you! :p

I stopped back by The Movie Monkey

I'm Katharine Hepburn...I'm honored! My favorite!

Katharine Hepburn

You scored 14% grit, 47% wit, 38% flair, and 16% class!

You are the fabulously quirky and independent woman of character. You go your own way, follow your own drummer, take your own lead. You stand head and shoulders next to your partner, but you are perfectly willing and able to stand alone. Others might be more classically beautiful or conventionally woman-like, but you possess a more fundamental common sense and off-kilter charm, making interesting men fall at your feet. You can pick them up or leave them there as you see fit. You share the screen with the likes of Spencer Tracy and Cary Grant, thinking men who like strong women.

You are loaded with a quirky kind of class that people find irresistable. Men turn and look at you admiringly as you walk down the street, and even your rivals have a grudging respect for you. You usually know the right thing to say, do and, of course, wear. You can take charge of a situation when things get out of hand, and you do it with great poise and chic. Your wit and sense of fun endear you to your partner and every other man in the room. Your screen partners include William Powell and Cary Grant. You're quite a catch...if you want to be caught.

Like hearing that wasn't bad enough... Each year the staff at Beloit College in Wisconsin puts together a list to try to give the faculty a sense of the mindset of this year's incoming freshmen. Here's this year's list:

The people who entered college this fall were born in 1987.
(And I've changed some of their diapers!!!!!!!)

They are too young to remember the space shuttle blowing up.
Their lifetime has always included AIDS.
Bottle caps have always been screw off and plastic.
The CD was introduced the year they were born.
They have always had an answering machine.
They have always had cable.
They cannot fathom not having a remote control.
Jay Leno has always been on the Tonight Show.
Popcorn has always been cooked in the microwave.
They never took a swim and thought about Jaws.
They can't imagine what hard contact lenses are.
They don't know who Mork was or where he was from.
They never heard: "Where's the Beef?", "I'd walk a mile for a Camel", or "de plane, Boss, de plane".
They have no idea who J.R. was and could care less he was shot.
McDonald's never came in styrofoam containers.
They don't have a clue how to use a typewriter.
Do you feel old yet? YES!

What Color Should Your Eyes Be?

Your Eyes Should Be Violet

Your eyes reflect: Mystery and allure

What's hidden behind your eyes: A quiet passion
What Color Should Your Eyes Be?
My eyes are really Hazel!
So whoever gets Hazel let me know what that means :D

Drake Bell Survives Car Crash

Jacob and I finally watched Drake and Josh Go to Hollywood" tonight (thank you DVR!). It was weird watching Drake drive so wrecklessly in the movie especially due to his recent accident. Jacob is worried (now that he knows Drake is okay) about his carrer. :D

Brownies

So Jacob and I just made brownies. Well, Jacob made the suggestion. Just as I finished putting the pan in the oven he conveniently reappeared. "Now you help after I make the brownies."

He got the look on his face...he knows he's busted, but is trying to cover it up with a "shocked" look. He looked around and said, "You didn't make brownies. They're still in the oven." :D

I'm sharing the brownie story because every time I make brownies I think of Melinda. I was a brand new nurse at my first nursing job ever. One of the first things I remember skinny little Melinda say to me is, "Everyone has the ingredients at home to make brownies at any time."
I didn't. And I didn't today. I used a box. And I'm lucky we even had the two eggs required to mix in it.

But every time I make brownies...from scratch or a box...I always think of my Melinda. I've never shared that with her. But, I think it's time I should.

Melinda's the toy inside your favorite box of sugary cereal. No! She's not cheap and dispensable. (Some might argue the "cheap" part...just kidding. Big hugs!) She's a bonus. The friend that's above and beyond what you need or expect. The one that sticks around when everything gets all messed up and yucky. She's the toy.

Thursday Thirteen

I know it's not Thursday...but I'm only a few days behind (or a few ahead) and I had nothing else to do :D

Thirteen Things about Kimmy and Jacob

1. We all have November birthdays...Kimmy November 30th, Jacob November 3rd, and Snickers (our Fox Terrier) November 26th.

2. We both had milestone birthdays this year.

3. We love the movie "elf".

4. Jacob likes to watch "Drake and Josh" (shh...so do I!) and any game on tv.

5. Kimmy won't miss an episode of "Grey's Anatomy" or "My Name Is Earl".

6. Jacob plays baseball, football and basketball.

7. Kimmy loves to surf...the t.v. and internet :D

8. Snickers was adopted from the Humane Society as a Christmas gift for Jacob two years ago.

9. Jacob is a full-time student.

10. Kimmy has been on disability for the past 3.5 years.

11. Kimmy's had a headache 24/7 for the past 7 years (actually the headaches started 24/7 from the age of 13 to 18 resulting in the doctors using me as a guinea pig with scores of medications then finally five operations...a few years of only an occasional headache...then '99- to present with constant pain and eleven additional operations from '99-'02...then said, "No more, thank you.")

12. Jacob gets headaches at least 4 times a month. Praying God keeps my disease far, far, far away from him! (Why is it parents only pass down the "bad" genes? For example...Mom's side skinny-Dad's side fat...guess who I take after! :D)

13. Jacob is the tallest kid in his class...5'3".

What Age Do You Act?

You Are 28 Years Old

Under 12: You are a kid at heart. You still have an optimistic life view - and you look at the world with awe.

13-19: You are a teenager at heart. You question authority and are still trying to find your place in this world.

20-29: You are a twentysomething at heart. You feel excited about what's to come... love, work, and new experiences.

30-39: You are a thirtysomething at heart. You've had a taste of success and true love, but you want more!

40+: You are a mature adult. You've been through most of the ups and downs of life already. Now you get to sit back and relax.

TEXAS WON 41-38 against USC!!!!! Read the article. (by Jacob)

O Holy Cow!

Rumor has it this is an ACTUAL audition tape. Just when you think it can't get any worse... it happens! (From a person who can't sing, but wishes she could so desperately...I always say, "It doesn't matter if you can't carry a tune in a bucket as long as you carry it in your heart," but this...)

You can read more about this in The Sneeze and 'Annoying Music' for the holidays on npr.

Oookkkkkkaaaaayyyyy!

It's not enough that I hear it from my mom..."Kimmy, you have to stop drinking that Pepsi!" Or the family friend...also our family doctor..."You shouldn't drink that stuff. Imagine what it's doing to your body. Next time take the Pepsi and pour it over a car battery and watch it eat the acid off. Think about that!"

Now my favorite morning program, the TODAY SHOW, is conspiring against me. Oh, Joy Bauer! Why pick on the fizzy lifting drink? Can a drink that originally contained cocaine be that bad for you?

Yes...I know...I'm a nurse! (Alright...a nurse off on disability for the past 3 1/2 years...but a nurse nonetheless.) And I'm not even touching the... "Nurses are the worst patients." I know the risks... (and zero health benefits)...But I NEED it! It's my daily caffeine fix. It's my vasoconstrictor and vasodilator all in one. It's my cold, fizzy, sugary sweetness.

Coffee...First, I prefer cold drinks (cold coffee...yucky!)to hot drinks (unless we're talkin' hot chocolate!) Do I get a bonus point since the body burns more calories warming the cold drink to body temperature? Huh. Second, how could it be better if I have to add 1/4 cup of sugar to it?

Tea...again...iced (sweet) tea. I do like a good Chai Tea...cold or hot. I'm going to try Yogi Tea
I read about while reading The Journey of Life blog. Who couldn't use a good Peach DeTox every now and then? Bonus...free samples! **Mia...I recommend Raspberry Ginger!**

I'm not saying I'm giving up on my Pepsi. Most of you know I've tried and tried and tried that before. But I'm going to cut down. (I "only" drink one 20oz bottle- or less- a day...compared to the multiple PolarPops I used to drink a day. But that's when I could drive.) Here's to aught 6!

What Crappy Christmas Gift Are You?

You Are Socks!

Cozy and warm... but easily lost.
You make a good puppet.

Red, White and Blue...How 'bout You?

You Are 90% "Average American"

You are average because you've known your best friend for at least ten years.

You are not average since you don't drink.

First Day of '06

We welcomed in 2006 with a (quiet) bang.

Jacob fell asleep around 10:30p.m. "I'm not going to sleep. I'm just resting my eyes."

Fifteen minutes 'til the ball drops...uh oh! I forgot the sparkling cider. Grorange Juice will have to do! (Grape and Orange...tasty!)

After fifteen minutes of shaking, screaming, poking and prodding Jacob finally woke up...drank some Grorange, listened to the final countdown, watched the ball drop, gave me a kiss and curled up under the blankets.

Hello 2006!

Like Sand Through the Hourglass

Like sand through the hour glass...so are the days of our lives. (Another addicting game from digg.)
